Where did you first learn of contra dancing?

It was a "Communiversity" class in Kansas City and I went to the class. It was a dance!

As a beginner, what was your first impression of contra?

It seemed like a perfect fit for what I like to do.

How long have you been calling? Have you written dances?

About 18 years. I have written about 4 or 5 dances that are any good.

Do you have a favorite dance to call...and why?

There are so many good dances and they each are needed for different situations, so it is hard to narrow it down. I do like calling squares, though, because of the challenge, and because I can use my voice in different ways. I especially like to call "Suzie Q", a dance I got from Larry Edelman.

What one thing do you think that most contra dancers can do to improve their dance?

Try English Country Dance. That elegant style really helped me to dance contras more smoothly. Studying the music or learning to play an instrument would make a dancer more musical when they dance, and more on time for the dance moves.

What one piece of advice would you give beginner dancers so they can enjoy the dance more?

Keep dancing! It gets easier and more fun the longer you do it.

From your perspective of the dance floor on the caller's stand, what movements do you most like to view during a dance?

Everyone swinging. The skirts are flying and the swirling motion is beautiful.

If you had one wish related to contra dancing, what would it be?

That the whole world did it every day, especially in the morning. A great way to start the day. I think it would help world peace if all the politicians and leaders danced with each other. Everyone would be healthier, happier, and would have more friends.
